Customer success is important to Appway: We want to give our users the best experience, and focus on the areas that will add the most value for you. As we look to the future, we have decided to update our technical requirements in order to be able to take advantage of new technology, in line with industry standards. This move forward will also improve the security and performance of Appway.
We are therefore announcing today that Appway 7, scheduled for release in 2015, will require the following:
We are giving you advance notice to ensure you have as much time as possible to plan for this change.
Please note that existing Appway solutions are not affected by this decision. We will continue to support earlier releases of Appway.
More details on each of these changes can be found below.
Browser Support
What is changing?
Microsoft announced that they will completely end support for IE8 in January 2015. Appway will also stop supporting this browser in the Studio with the release of Appway 7, scheduled for 2015.
While IE8 can still be used in the Appway 7 Workspace, some new features and functionality in the Workspace will only work in IE9 or greater.
Note: As of Appway 7, IE7 will not be supported in the Workspace. As of Appway 8 (planned for 2016), IE8 will no longer be supported in the Workspace.
Why are we ending support?
Security and innovation are important to us at Appway. The security vulnerabilities discovered in IE8, and the lack of support for HTML5 are two of the main reasons for our decision. HTML5 is the new industry standard: Moving beyond IE8 will allow us to utilize modern browser technology for the benefit of you, our users.
What action do I need to take?
We strongly recommend that you upgrade to one of our supported browsers prior to the 2015 release:
Java JDK and Servlet API
What is changing?
As of Appway 7, application servers will be required to run Java JDK 1.7, and Servlet Specification 3.0 or above.
Why are we ending support?
Two key factors stood out for us when deciding to update our technical requirements: security and advances in technology.
Oracle announced the end of support for Java JDK 1.6 in February 2013. Moving to 1.7 means we are using a maintained JDK, a more secure foundation for us to build upon.
Moving to Java JDK 1.7 also allows us to take advantage of web service features and improved APIs for Appway 7.
Upgrading to Specification 3.0 will improve platform performance and Screen responsiveness through use of the WebSocket protocol.
What action do I need to take?
We strongly recommend that you upgrade to an application server supporting Servlet Specification 3.0 prior to the 2015 release:
