Developer Blog |
This year has been a busy year on Appway Developer — from the great recipes and documentation produced to following the informative discussions in the Forum, we hope there was something useful for everyone.
See what we think are some highlights of 2014 below: what content would you recommend to members of the Developer Community?
Community
We've had the honor of welcoming over 170 new members to the Developer Community since January 2014! Our Academy delivered over 1300 hours of training to 400+ trainees, and expanded the courses to include Integration, and Appway 6.
Cookbook
Our cookbook is bursting with recipes! We've published over 60 new recipes this year, covering a wide variety of topics. While the five most popular recipes (listed below) cover aspects of Screen design, members of the Developer Community have also been busy cooking up great content on paginating tables, portal screen popups, and PDFs, to name a few.
Here's the top five recipes of 2014:
Which recipe is your favorite? Let us know in the comments below!
Blog
We've diversified the content on our blog this year to include more than just the latest patch release announcements. Developer Community member L. Mathis wrote about 'responsive design', while T. Suter wrote a two-part series about 'databases and the future'.
We gathered a couple of ideas from the team about how to be more productive using Appway, and suggested some tips and tricks on using the Portal Worklist extension.

Documentation
We published documentation on many topics over the course of 2014, and have much more on the way for next year. We highly recommend reading through all the following pieces — but if you've only got time for one, we'd suggest "Data Management".
Data Management
This document describes how Appway organizes and stores business data in the short and long term. Data Class business objects form an app's data model. When the app is executed, Appway stores data in a Value Store for the duration of a Process instance. If a piece of information needs to live beyond this timeframe, it can be stored in a relational or non-relational database.
System Installation (Appway 6)
The Appway Platform is a web application that runs on a Java application server. It can be installed on a single server, or on multiple nodes to run as a cluster. It requires a local file system for each node and, in the case of a multi-node installation, a shared storage solution. The shared storage can be a shared file system, a relational database or an Apache Cassandra database.
System Migration: Single node to multi-node
This guide explains the steps necessary to migrate from a single-node to a multi-node Appway installation (Appway 6.0 and above). Areas which require particular attention include job scheduling, caching behavior and file management.
Forum
The Forum is where you can ask questions, get assistance and help others with their Appway solution. There have been over 120 discussions started this year on a wide range of topics. Here's a couple we picked out that caught our eye:
1. Cluster - Identify Node for a Given Process
2. Portal Page Issue
3. Workspace CSS Version
4. How to Change the Content of a Catalog Programatically
5. What replaces UseValueStore() following its deprecation in Appway 6?
We hope you value being part of the Developer Community and would love to hear any feedback, suggestions or other ideas you may have!
